{"id":357,"date":"2022-01-21T15:12:36","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T23:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writingthenorthwest.com\/?p=357"},"modified":"2024-06-25T10:31:53","modified_gmt":"2024-06-25T17:31:53","slug":"guest-post-writer-stewart-holbrook-was-the-nws-best-known-personality-but-never-received-the-credit-he-deserved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writingthenorthwest.com\/?p=357","title":{"rendered":"Guest Post: Writer Stewart Holbrook Was the NW&#8217;s &#8216;Best-Known Personality&#8217; But Never Received the Credit He Deserved"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>by <a href=\"https:\/\/mlschepps.com\/\">Michael Schepps<\/a><\/strong>  (you&#8217;ll find a full bio, including a link to Schepps&#8217;s new book,  <em>Split Aces<\/em>, at the end of the article)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout much of his life, the writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1964\/09\/04\/archives\/stewart-h-holbrook-71-dies-wrote-of-american-outdoors-author-of.html\">Stewart Holbrook<\/a> (1893-1964) was considered&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ochcom.org\/holbrook\/\">\u201cperhaps the Pacific Northwest&#8217;s best-known personality<\/a>.\u201d In seemingly endless articles that garnered a devoted local readership and were often excerpted in the national press, Holbrook captured and caricatured what he called the country\u2019s \u201cFar Corner\u201d during its rapid mid-20th century modernization, painting an indelible portrait whose legacy lives on today. But Holbrook did more than just portray the Northwest. His stylistic innovations in the field of creative nonfiction are the equal of the more-celebrated<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2015\/06\/joe-mitchells-secret\/392048\/\"> Joseph Mitchell<\/a>, but he has never received the credit he deserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Holbrook\u2019s primary interests was timber. After years of working in Northwest logging camps (as well as sojourns in the theater world and on the battlefields of France), he took a position in Portland in 1923 as the associate editor of the<a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/labhist\/strike\/mickelson.shtml\"> 4-L Lumber News<\/a>, the mouthpiece for a government-and-industry-backed labor union meant to be an alternative to the radical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonencyclopedia.org\/articles\/industrial_workers_of_the_world_iww_\/#.YeHEmy-B1mA\">Industrial Workers of the World, or Wobblies.<\/a> Seeking to supplement his income through freelancing, he found a home in the pages of <em>The Oregonian. <\/em>There, he regaled readers with histories, character studies, and reportage about whatever crossed his path, including his observations during drinking sessions with the grizzled waterfront tough <a href=\"https:\/\/offbeatoregon.com\/1407c.bunco-kelley-part2-the-myths.html\">Edward \u201cSpider\u201d Johnson<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written with considerable brio while invoking a demi-realm of myth and history, these articles are much of the reason for Holbrook\u2019s lasting influence. In particular, his vivid <a href=\"https:\/\/classic.esquire.com\/article\/1954\/4\/1\/elbow-bending-for-giants\">evocation<\/a> of the Pantagruelian proportions of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonencyclopedia.org\/articles\/ericksons-saloon\/\"> Augustus Erickson\u2019s gargantuan bar<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theawl.com\/2014\/07\/the-legend-of-the-legend-of-bunko-kelly-the-kidnapping-king-of-portland\/\">sinister<\/a> chthonic depths of the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonencyclopedia.org\/articles\/shanghai_tunnels_myth\/#.YeGvGy-B1-U\">Shanghai Tunnels<\/a> helped create the popular perception of nineteenth-century Portland as an \u201canything-goes\u201d fantasia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Holbrook\u2019s depiction, a wild drinking session at the \u201clongest bar in the world\u201d might end with the drinker being drugged and trafficked (alongside dead men and cigar-store statues) through tunnels honeycombing the waterfront, only to wake up in chains (while facing a year\u2019s harsh service) on a rotting clipper ship rounding the Horn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/writingthenorthwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1292-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingthenorthwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1292-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/writingthenorthwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1292-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writingthenorthwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1292-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/writingthenorthwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1292-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Holbrook\u2019s work appeared in national publications such as <em>The<\/em> <em>New Yorker, The American Mercury,<\/em> and <em>Esquire<\/em> at the same time his East Coast contemporary Joseph Mitchell was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1942\/08\/15\/king-of-the-gypsies\">publishing<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1942\/12\/12\/professor-sea-gull\">character<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1944\/11\/25\/coffins-undertakers-hearses-funeral-parlors\">sketches<\/a> that would make him famous as a progenitor of what is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/1972\/05\/notes-on-the-new-journalism\/376276\/\">\u201cnew journalism,\u201d<\/a> he has never received adequate credit for his own innovations in prose. When literary historian Norman Sims named Joseph Mitchell a major influence on \u201cnew journalism\u201d (or literary journalism) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/1992\/08\/06\/the-new-yorkers-joseph-mitchell-past-pluperfect\/4c3afdd2-a045-4812-b211-42f7478ffe68\/\">he pointed to Mitchell\u2019s penchant <\/a>for &#8220;merging fiction and nonfiction, the symbolic and the literal, biography and reportage, the real and the imagined landscapes of the city.\u201d&nbsp;What is true for Mitchell is equally true for Holbrook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with Mitchell, Holbrook wrote from a participant-observer perspective and often focused on \u201clowbrow\u201d life, which are valuable tools today in any nonfiction writer\u2019s toolkit. Of course, he shared some of Mitchell\u2019s more questionable practices too, including the use of composite characters, invented dialogue, and hyperbole in the service of a larger truth (practices for which Mitchell has more recently suffered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/first_person\/joseph_mitchell_new_yorker.php\">dramatic reappraisal<\/a>, with some even wondering if he was truly a journalist).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read as imaginative literature or \u201cliterary journalism,\u201d Holbrook\u2019s work remains clean and compelling, the deeper truths beneath the varnish of embellishment and hyperbole shining through as bright as ever. But as serious history, it is greatly lacking. One historian has gone so far as to say that \u201crepetition of a Holbrook fiction is a sure indication of lazy scholarship and gullibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his lifetime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/list\/4364137.Stewart_Hall_Holbrook\">Holbrook published over 30 books and countless articles<\/a>. At its best, his work ties together strands of deep research and interviewing, a bright sense of place and character, and a singularly appealing voice. The East Coast transplant understood an essential truth about the region where he made his home and set his writing: it was a place of malleability and reinvention whose story had not yet been fully told\u2014a place where the telling of its story could both define it and make it new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Schepps<\/strong> is a writer, editor and publisher&nbsp;in Portland.
