Mulcahy<\/a><\/strong> moved west from Philadelphia in her twenties and found a home in two places: Portland, Oregon, and Michoac\u00e1n, Mexico. While teaching at La Universidad Latina de Am\u00e9rica in Morelia, she discovered the murals of the extraordinary but largely forgotten American artist Marion Greenwood and spent ten years writing her biography, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/84534\/9780817361983\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/84534\/9780817361983\">Marion Greenwood: Portrait and Self-Portrait<\/a><\/em>, <\/strong>published by the University of Alabama Press last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:10px;padding-left:10px\">Mulcahy holds an MA in anthropology and a PhD in folklore and has done research in the Arctic, Northern Ireland, Australia, and Latin American. Her travels led to the writing of two books focused on traditional healers and one on travel writing. <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/84534\/9780820322537\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/84534\/9780820322537\">Birth and Rebirth on an Alaskan Island<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and\u00a0<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/edmondsbookshop.com\/book\/9781595340658\">Remedios: The Healing Life of Eva Castellanoz<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, explore the cultural frameworks surrounding health and illness in different societies. <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/84534\/9780226444499\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/84534\/9780226444499\">Writing Abroad: A Guide for Travelers<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (co-written with Peter Chilson) offers a toolkit for exploring and writing about diverse cultures. <strong><em>Writing Abroad<\/em><\/strong> received the Peace Corps Worldwide Best Travel Book award in 2017 and was included in <em>Poets and Writers Magazine\u2019s 2018 List of Best Books for Writers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:10px;padding-left:10px\">Mulcahy\u2019s essays and interviews have appeared in numerous journals, including\u00a0<em>Hyperallergic<\/em>, <em>The Writers\u2019 Chronicle<\/em>, and <em>The Women\u2019s Review of Books<\/em>. She has also contributed work to several anthologies: <em>The Stories that Shape Us: Contemporary Women Write about the West,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Resurrecting Grace: Remembering Catholic Childhoods<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Women Writing Women: A Frontiers Reader<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>These United States<\/em>. Among the organizations that have supported her work with grants and fellowships are the Alaska Humanities Forum, the British Council, and Oregon Literary Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:10px;padding-left:10px\">For over thirty years, Mulcahy taught creative nonfiction writing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.lclark.edu\/programs\/northwest_writing_institute\/\">NW Writing Institute<\/a> at Lewis and Clark College, as well as anthropology and gender studies to undergraduates. She also co-directed the NW Writing Institute\u2019s Certificate in Documentary Studies and led workshops for The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
