Lily Yu\u2019s <\/strong>first novel,<strong> <\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/edmondsbookshop.com\/book\/9781645660323\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/edmondsbookshop.com\/book\/9781645660323\">On Fragile Waves<\/a><\/em>, appeared in 2021, it received starred reviews from <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em>, <em>Booklist<\/em>, <em>Library Journal<\/em>, and <em>Foreword Reviews<\/em>. In a rave review in the <em>New York Times Book Review<\/em>, author Amal El-Mohtar called it \u201cdevastating and perfect.\u201d It went on to win the Washington State Book Award in Fiction and was named one of the best books of the year by NPR. The book weaves elements of fantasy and magic realism into the harrowing and often heartbreaking story of a family emigrating from Afghanistan, hoping to reach Australia. With compassion and flashes of humor, it takes us deeply into the human side of what we see in the news every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:10px;padding-left:10px\">Yu\u2019s second book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/84534\/9781645660484\">Jewel Box<\/a><\/em>, a collection of fantasy-centered stories, appeared two years later and became a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the World Fantasy Award, and a Washington State Book Award. It received starred reviews from <em>Kirkus Reviews<\/em>, <em>Library Journal<\/em>, and <em>Foreword Review<\/em>. \u201cEach story here is a gem,\u201d wrote the <em>Kirkus<\/em> reviewer. \u201cA trove of fantastical treasures.\u201d The <em>Library Journal <\/em>said, \u201cRun, don\u2019t walk, to get a hold of this transformative text.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:10px;padding-left:10px\">Yu, who lives in Seattle, has received the Artist Trust LaSalle Storyteller Award and the Astounding Award for Best New Writer. Individual stories of hers have appeared in venues from&nbsp;<em>McSweeney\u2019s<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>Tor.com<\/em>, as well as fourteen best-of-the-year anthologies.
